Research

Philips plays a leading role in shaping the world of digital electronics by bringing meaningful technological innovations to people. Many of these innovations find their roots in the laboratories of Philips Research.

Founded in Eindhoven, the Netherlands in 1914, Philips Research now is one of the world’s major private research organizations, with laboratories in the Netherlands, Belgium, England, Germany, the United States, China and India, collectively some 2,100 people.

Through its inventions Philips Research creates breakthroughs in how people experience technologies. Our research is increasingly focused on Philips’ strategic areas: Healthcare, Lifestyle and Technology. In our vision of Ambient Intelligence, stand-alone devices will increasingly disappear from the foreground in the home and be replaced by a network of background devices that create the desired functionality.

Scientists from a wide range of disciplines, from electrical engineering and physics to chemistry, mathematics, mechanics, information technology and software, work in close proximity, influencing and broadening each other's views, thus reaping the benefits of synergy and cross-fertilization of ideas.
